We’re building more than just mahjong skills—we’re building community.

Our Story

Mocha Mahj was founded by three friends in Houston—women of color, wives, and mothers—who wanted to create a space where the timeless game of mahjong could be accessible, inclusive, and fun for everyone. We noticed that many communities, especially those that look like us, weren’t being reached by the existing mahjong circles in the city. So, we built our own table.

We believe in the power of hobbies that challenge the mind and nourish the soul. At Mocha Mahj, it’s not just about the tiles—it’s about building community, honoring culture, and having a great time while doing it.

About American Mahjong

The Story of American Mahjong
Mahjong originated in China in the mid-to-late 1800s and became a cherished part of Chinese social life with rich symbolism and significant cultural meaning. In the 1920s, mahjong made its way to the United States, where it was adapted into what we now know as American mahjong. This version introduced a standardized card, jokers, and new rules, creating a unique style of play that blended the original Chinese traditions with distinctly American innovations. Over the past century, American mahjong has become a pastime in many communities offering a fun mix of challenge, camaraderie, and competition.

Honoring the Game’s Roots
While American mahjong has its own identity, it is important to acknowledge and respect the game’s origins in Chinese culture. The tiles, terms, and rituals at the heart of mahjong carry history that predates its American adaptation. By learning and playing with intention, we not only enjoy the game in its modern form but also hold deep respect for the people, traditions, and artistry that made it possible.

At Mocha Mahj, we celebrate the vibrant cross-cultural journey of mahjong while recognizing that the game we play today is deeply connected to an ancient and storied history.

We started playing and thought that a lot of people we knew would really like to play it,” Bailey says. “People who look like us.”
